Jalen Johnson's sprained ankle has cost him one game so far, and Wednesday is the next test

Johnson sprained his left ankle on Saturday and missed Monday's win in Indiana. No timeline has been reported beyond Wednesday's game in Washington, so hold him and plan for a short absence.

The Hawks listed Jalen Johnson as out for Monday's game at Indiana with a left ankle sprain in their official injury update, after he had been questionable earlier in the day, and Atlanta won 108-104 without him. The sprain happened in the third quarter of Saturday's loss in New Orleans, according to Rotoworld, and he did not play in the fourth. The team has not said how serious it is, and no timeline has been reported beyond a note from RotoWire, carried by CBS Sports, that his next chance to play comes on Wednesday against the Wizards.

Ranks from our projections board and the analysts' consensus, updated nightly.

That leaves fantasy managers with an injury that has no diagnosis beyond the word sprain, on a player our points board under ESPN's standard scoring ranks 13th, so the right move is the patient one. Johnson averaged 42.3 fantasy points a game over his first seven, with a 16-assist night against Houston on October 24 among them, and nothing about one missed game changes what he is when he is on the floor.

What our projections did with it

Our live projections took the absence as games rather than as a change in the player. His projected line is still 20.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and 7.6 assists in 34.9 minutes, and his per-game value under ESPN's standard scoring is unchanged at 45.4. What moved is the number of games we expect him to play, from 74.2 to 71.9, which slipped him from 12th to 13th on our points board while he stayed 16th on our 9-cat board. The analysts' consensus has him eighth on points and 17th on 9-cat. If the ankle turns out to cost him a week or more, the projection will move again as the games come off, but the reporting so far does not point there.

Who covered on Monday

Nickeil Alexander-Walker took the shots. He scored 34 points on 12-for-25 shooting with nine threes and four steals, a 62-point line under ESPN's scoring, and our live projections moved him from 67th to 56th on points and from 39th to 32nd on 9-cat after it. CJ McCollum ran the offense with 12 assists, though on 4-for-17 shooting, and his line was worth 40 fantasy points, one short of his season high. Luguentz Dort took Johnson's starting spot and scored 14 with four threes and no assists, which replaced some of Johnson's shooting and none of his playmaking or rebounding, and Aaron Wiggins scored seven in 24 minutes off the bench. Rotoworld named Wiggins as the player who might pick up the slack if Johnson stayed out, and CBS Sports listed Wiggins, Dort and Asa Newell as candidates for more minutes.

What to do

Keep Johnson in your lineup plans and do not trade him at a discount over a sprain the team has not described as anything worse. In a daily league, check the Hawks' injury report before Wednesday's tip in Washington. If you need a body for one or two nights, Alexander-Walker is the Hawk whose Monday showed up most clearly in the box score, and he is likely already rostered in most leagues. Dort is worth an add only in deep leagues that need threes, since our projection has him at 1.4 assists and 3.5 rebounds a game. Johnson's earlier split between formats is in our points versus categories piece, and his 16-assist night is in our Hawks story from October 25. We will update this when Atlanta says more about the ankle.
