Roto is not head-to-head over a longer season, and these players are worth more in it
In a rotisserie league a punted category scores one point of twelve all season and ESPN caps each lineup at 820 games, which lifts Walker Kessler, Zach Edey and Ausar Thompson and costs Giannis and Jalen Brunson.

A head-to-head categories league plays the same categories one week at a time against one opponent, and a week is won by taking more categories than the other side. The two formats use the same stat lines, but they reward different rosters, and the habits that win head-to-head leagues, punting a category and streaming for games, either fail or stop mattering in roto.

This guide uses our roto engine, which projects each team's season totals night by night over the NBA schedule, and our 9-cat projections as of mid-October. ESPN's default roto league counts eight categories, leaving out turnovers, and limits each lineup slot to 82 games, which ESPN's own settings guide and Yahoo's help pages both describe as the standard roto limit; with ten starting slots that is 820 games a season. The advice is for the trades and pickups of the first weeks, and for any league still to draft.
